Fossil-Fuel Funded Operatives Litter the Mainstream Media, Despite Simple Fix

Have you ever found yourself reading a news article or op-ed in which an “expert” from a distinguished-sounding “think tank” or “institute” seeks to distort or attack climate change science or, alternately, decries public investment in clean energy solutions, and wonder in whose interest this individual and their organization is operating?

Who is funding the proliferation of the anti-renewables, pro-status-quo perspective in all these mainstream media outlets? And why is the media providing them a platform at all, let alone without disclosing the fossil fuel funding behind their misinformation efforts?

Well, today the Checks and Balances Project released a report revealing the extent of this problem in the mainstream media.

The Checks and Balances report, Fossil Fuel Front Groups on the Front Page, concludes that 58 of the largest mainstream newspapers and publications have quoted or given op-ed space to a fossil-fuel-funded “expert” every other day for the past five years, on average.

“Despite having received millions of dollars from fossil fuel interests, such as ExxonMobil and Koch Industries, these groups’ financial ties to the fossil fuel industry are rarely mentioned,” according to the report.

Checks and Balances writes that it “uncovered the extent of this deception by focusing on the 10 most prominent fossil fuel front groups’ traction [in] 58 of the largest daily newspapers, the Associated Press and Politico. This analysis does not include mentions in broadcast, radio or online publications for these 10 advocacy groups.  As a result, this report only scratches the surface on these fossil fuel-funded groups’ influence on the energy debate.”

The report has received a chilly response from some of the very “experts” often quoted without any disclosure of their fossil fuel funding.  Steven “Junk Man” Milloy was so peeved that he tapped out a quick post attacking the messenger, a typical tactic of the fossil-fuel-funded echo chamber.

Milloy knows the tobacco playbook well. As Connor Gibson points out over at PolluterWatch,  “Steve Milloy has been a central climate denier, who was paid to shill for tobacco company Phillip Morris and oil giant Exxon before work for the Cato Institute and starting the climate denial website “JunkScience.”

Monckton Banned From UN Climate Process For Offensive Stunt

Christopher Monckton, Lord Crazypants of Brenchley, made a fool of himself today at COP18 in Doha, Qatar by impersonating a delegate in a plenary session. He was immediately debadged and escorted out of the conference, and is likely being deported from Qatar right now.

The UN now confirms that Lord Monckton has been permanently barred from the UNFCCC process.

Cindy Baxter broke the news on Twitter

Good riddance, indeed. Over the years, Monckton has attempted to disrupt the UN process with various stunts of ill-taste - but none so offensive as the one he tried to pull this time.

Watch this clip put together by TckTckTck about Monckton's stunt which earned him boos from the audience, got him debadged, escorted out of the conference and he will likely be asked to leave Qatar:

Fashion for the Discerning Climate Science Denier

Whether you're skydiving onto the beaches of Durban, galavanting across the U.S. on the Tea Party's invitation to spread Birther lies about President Obama's birth certificate, pitching 'Fox News Australia' to a wealthy mining magnate, or referring to young climate activists as “Hitler Youthwithout apology, the discerning climate science (and reality) denier must make a fashion statement.

So believes the “Lord” Christopher Walter Monckton, the star of this must-see fashion show:

Shell's Arctic Oil Spill Gear "Crushed Like a Beer Can" In Simple Test

Royal Dutch Shell, the massive multinational oil company, badly wants to be ready to drill for oil in the Arctic Ocean next summer. This year, the company's plans to begin drilling in the treacherous seas of the Arctic were thwarted by its late start and repeated failures to get even basic oil spill response equipment into place.

But the full extent of the company's failed attempts to test oil spill response gear was recently revealed by Seattle's NPR radio affiliate KUOW. Shell has faced repeated criticism and regulatory scrutiny over its cavalier attitude towards Arctic drilling, and the KUOW investigation makes clear why Shell is not “Arctic Ready” by a long shot.

Documents obtained by KUOW through FOIA requests indicate that Shell's oil spill response gear failed spectacularly in tests this fall in the relatively tranquil waters of Puget Sound.

The containment dome - which Shell sought to assure federal regulators would be adequate to cap a blowout in the event of emergency at its Arctic operations - failed miserably in tests.  The dome “breached like a whale” after malfunctioning, and then sank 120 feet. When the crew of the Arctic Challenger recovered the 20-foot-tall containment dome, they found that it had “crushed like a beer can” under pressure.

Hey Bill O'Reilly, You're Busted! Fan Watches 'Chasing Ice' And Now Understands Global Warming Is Real

Bill O'Reilly has been put on notice by a former fan who claims to have watched his Fox News show every day and took his word for it that climate change is nothing to worry about. Well, today she watched the incredible new documentary film 'Chasing Ice' and left the theater determined to educate all of her friends (whom she had convinced that global warming was fake) about the reality of climate change.

Have you seen 'Chasing Ice' yet? (Watch the trailer below the fold.)

Here is a prime example why it is such an important film. Please spread the word far and wide. This could be a game changer for those who've been misled by Fox News.
