Joseph (Joe) D'Aleo

Credentials

  • BS, MS, University of Wisconsin
  • Attended Doctoral program at NYU.

Source: [1]

While some sources mention that Joe D'Aleo attended studies at NYU, it is unclear if he graduated.

Background

Joseph D'Aleo is a former college professor of Meteorology at Lyndon State College.

He is the Executive Director and Certified Consultant Meteorologist [1] of the International Climate and Environmental Change Assessment Project (ICECAP) [2], an organization of climate change skeptics.

D'Aleo was the first Director of Meteorology at the cable TV Weather Channel and was ex-Chief Meteorologist at Weather Services International Corporation and Senior Editor of "Dr. Dewpoint" for WSI’s Intellicast.com web site.

He was a co-author of Fraser Institute's [3] 2007 Independent Summary for Policymakers (ISPM) [4].

According to leaked documents [5], D'Aleo is one of a number of climate change skeptics who receives funding [6] from the Heartland Institute [7], an organization at the forefront of climate change skepticism in the U.S.

Stance on Climate Change

"Sunspot cycles and their effects on oceans correlate with climate changes. Studying these and other factors suggests that a cold, not warm, climate may be in our future." [2]

Key Quotes

"[The IPCC's] models treat the oceans as distilled water when in reality they are an infinite buffer for atmospheric CO2. Burning all the earth’s fossil fuels would amount to no more than a 20 percent increase. It could never double(2). In any event, ice cores tell us carbon dioxide lags, not leads, the temperatures by as much as 800 years." [3]

Key Deeds

Ongoing

D'Aleo has appeared in numerous television interviews, including this one [8] conducted by the Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI [9]) in 2008:

May 2010

Represented ICECAP by speaking [10] at the Heartland Institute's 2010 International Conference on Climate Change. [4]

January, 2010

D'Aleo co-wrote (with "computer expert" E. Michael Smith) a report commissioned by the Science and Public Policy Institute [11] to investigate what has become known as "climategate [12]."

Together, they claim to have discovered "manipulation of the temperature data by the U.S. government’s two primary climate centers: the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) in Asheville, North Carolina and the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) at Columbia University in New York City." [5]

D'aleo also appeared on the television special "Global Warming: The Other Side," [13] which aired on January 14 at KUSI-TV, and featured a section on "ClimateGate." The program is introduced by John Coleman [14], and features other prominent climate change skeptics including Christopher Monckton [15], Richard Lindzen [16], S. Fred Singer [17], Craig D. Idso [18], and Willie Soon [19].

March 30, 2009

D'Aleo's signature is displayed [20] alongside a full-page ad funded by the CATO institute [21] that appeared [22] in numerous newspapers including the Washington Post, the New York Times and the Chicago Tribune in 2009.

The advertisement responds to President Obama's declaration that "few challenges facing America and the world are more urgent than combating climate change. The science is beyond dispute and the facts are clear" by saying that "with all due respect Mr. President, that is not true." It goes on to describe how "there has been no net global warming for over a decade," and how global warming is "grossly overstated." [6]

February 5, 2007

Co-authored the Fraser Institute's Independent Summary For Policymakers [23] which criticized the Independent Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The IPCC's own Summary For Policymakers was released shortly before the Fraser Institute document (PDF [24]).

March, 2008

Speaker [10]at the Heartland Institute's First International Conference on Climate Change (ICCC1). [4]

His speech was titled "Solar Irradiance and Oceans are the True Drivers of Climate Change."

Publications

D'Aleo appears to have co-published one article on global cooling (with geologist Don Easterbrook [31]) in the journal, Energy & Environment [32]:

  • Joseph D’Aleo and Don Easterbrook. “Multidecadal Tendencies in Enso and Global Temperatures Related to Multidecal Oscillations” (PDF [33]). Energy & Environment, Volume 21, Number 5, pp. 437-460, September 2010. Republished by SPPI.

According to a search of WorldCat [34], Energy & Environment is carried in only 25 libraries worldwide. The journal is not included in Journal Citation Reports [35], which lists the impact factors for the top 6000 peer-reviewed journals.

ICECAP mentions that D'Aleo has written a number of papers as well as published a book on "advanced applications enabled by new technologies and how research into ENSO and other atmospheric and oceanic phenomena has made skillful seasonal forecasts possible."
