International Scientists Confirm Climate Change is "Undeniable"

An international team of climate scientists led by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has confirmed that climate change is “undeniable” and clearly driven by the “human fingerprints” of greenhouse gas emissions.  The findings are based on new data that was not reviewed during the most recent 2007 report by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change

The Financial Times reported today that the NOAA study drew on 11 different indicators of climate, and “found that each one pointed to a world that was warming owing to the influence of greenhouse gases.”

The scientists confirmed that seven of the indicators are rising, including air temperature over land, sea-surface temperature, marine air temperature, sea level, ocean heat, humidity, and tropospheric temperature in the “active-weather” layer of the atmosphere closest to the earth’s surface. Four other indicators were declining: Arctic sea ice, glaciers, spring snow cover in the northern hemisphere, and stratospheric temperatures.

The Financial Times quotes Peter Stott, head of climate monitoring at the UK Met Office, stating:

“The whole of the climate system is acting in a way consistent with the effects of greenhouse gases. The fingerprints are clear. The glaringly obvious explanation for this is warming from greenhouse gases.”

Glaringly obvious, unless you are a climate skeptic who denies the facts in favor of touting manufactured scandals like “Climategate” - a mythical tale ginned up by the climate denial machine to further confuse the public about the real dangers of climate change.

The Smoking Guns and Blue Dress Moments of Climategate

In the days and weeks following the theft of climate scientists’ emails from the University of East Anglia’s Climatic Research Unit in November, climate change skeptics and deniers flooded the blogosphere and mainstream press with reactions suggesting that the ‘scandal’ had proven global warming was a myth.

In many instances, the reactions sounded like a choreographed choir singing from the same sheet of talking points, or at least the same sheet of of well-worn memes and cliches, like ‘smoking gun’ and ‘final nail in the coffin.’

The Desmog team took a look at several unique phrases that flew around the denier echo chamber in the aftermath of the CRU email hack, and how those memes were often adopted by the mainstream media as a result.  Here is a sampling of what we identified:

Wegman's Report Highly Politicized - and Fatally Flawed

“Independent” Hockey Stick analysis revealed as Republican set-up

The purportedly independent report that Dr. Edward Wegman prepared in 2006 for the Congressional Committee on Energy and Commerce was actually a partisan set-up, according to information revealed today.

Wegman, who had presented himself as an impartial “referee” between two “teams” debating the quality of the so-called Hockey Stick graph was, in fact, coached throughout his review by Republican staffer Peter Spencer. Wegman and his colleagues also worked closely with one of the teams (and especially with retired mining stock promoter Stephen McIntyre) to try to replicate criticism of the Hockey Stick graph, while at the same time foregoing contact with the actual authors of the seminal climate reconstruction.

The Hockey Stick refers to a graph (by Michael Mann, Raymond Bradley and Malcolm Hughes) that became a defining image of the Third Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). It also became a target for Steve McIntyre and the Guelph University economist Ross McKitrick, who since 2002, at least, has been a paid spokesperson for ExxonMobil-backed think tanks such as the Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI) and the Fraser Institute.

CEI: "Is Global Warming Burning Bush?"

It would destroy President Bush's legacy now to adopt Al Gore's global warming policies after pursuing much more effective policies for seven years. It is true that global warming alarmists are filing multiple lawsuits to use the Clean Air Act and the Endangered Species Act to cause a regulatory trainwreck…

CEI argues IPCC science without any scientists

The Competitive Enterprise Institute, who not even the likes of ExxonMobil want to be associated with anymore, has issued a media advisory today offering up their in-house staff as global warming “experts” available for comment on the upcoming release by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

With the IPCC report coming from scientists, you would think the CEI would be offering up scientists as global warming “experts.

Think again.

Here's some background information on each of their so-called “experts.”

Exxon Acknowledges Climate Change, cuts CEI's funding

“We know enough now - or, society knows enough now - that the risk is serious and action should be taken.”

Exxon Vice President for Public Affairs Kenneth Cohen

In an interview reported in the Wall Street Journal today, Kenneth Cohen began to shift Exxon's corporate positioning on climate change, accepting the reliability of the science and announcing that Exxon has stopped funding climate change deniers like the Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI).

Exxon flak argues global warming good for us

The latest Decima poll shows rising concern among Canadians over environmental issues, but an Exxon-funded spokesman says global warming has been given a bad rap and it’s time everyone looked at benefits like milder winters.

Exxon lobby group named "year's most influential" in global climate change

The US Weather Channel's “climate change mission statement ” reads: “Throughout the world, people are confused about climate change and global warming, [the Weather Channel] will provide a place where sound science can be heard.”

As regular DeSmog readers know, much of the confusion and doubt in the general public around the issue of climate change and the discussion around “sound science” has been at the hands of industry and oil company funded front groups. Such groups serve the purpose of doing and saying the things a modern day corporation cannot …

CEI Mourning the Loss of "Green" Republicans

That Myron Ebell: what a noble environmentalist. Here he is, weeping crocodile tears over the “green” Republicans who were among the losers in yesterday's mid-term elections.

It's funny because green is not usually Myron's colour. As the Competitive Enterprise Institute's Director of Energy and Global Warming Policy, Ebell is the brainy deceiver who brought us the CO2 is Life” ad campaign, promoting the indiscriminate burning of fossil fuel as a means to keep (some) Americans wealthy.
